This one will be a shorter teaching, but I felt it in my Spirit to write it anyway. This is the first question I will ask someone who challenges me on God's Law being rewritten or changed - 'Do you believe the 10 commandments are done away with?'.
So far, every time, people answered 'No'. They do not believe the 10 commandments are done away with. This is really strange to me, as the 10 commandments form part of the Law of Moses. The most common reason people give is because, 'They are still morally good".
So why are people cherry-picking which Laws to follow? Let's dive into that in this teaching.
Selective Theology
How can the Old Covenant be done away with if the Ten Commandments are still valid? As stated above, most people agree they are morally good, but ultimately superseded by the command Jesus gave to love God and love your neighbor.
We have a teaching showing that these two 'new' commandments Jesus gave are just a summary of the 10 commandments. You can read that in our Sabbath Teaching.
In some cases, people believe the 10 commandments are not part of the Old Covenant (Law of Moses). Scripture says otherwise:
Exo 34:28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
Deu 4:13 He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets.
Deu 4:14 And the LORD directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
Heb 9:4 which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.
Clearly, the 10 commandments form part of the Law of Moses, which is the 'old covenant'.
Conclusion
If people still believe the 10 commandments are valid in our lives today, then by default, they must accept the rest of the Law, because all of it forms part of the covenant God made with Moses and the Israelites.
The 'new' Laws Jesus gave (Love God and love your neighbor) are simply a summary of the 10 commandments given in the Old Covenant. As we have shown throughout this series, following God's Law does not give you salvation or make you more righteous, but it does show your obedience and love for Christ. To say you want to become like Jesus, and then refuse to follow how He (or his disciples) lived, is a lie that most Christians tell themselves.
Jesus did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it and to write it on our hearts rather than on stone. The moral standard of God has not changed; what changed is where that Law is written and how it is kept — through the Spirit, not human effort.
Be Blessed!
